Although the climate crisis may threaten our future, there are things that we all can do in the present to react against it. We may think that one person cannot make a difference, but if we all put forth an effort, we can see change. Small environmental actions can lead to significant changes.

Exactly what is this Carbon Footprint? A Carbon Footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases that are generated by our actions. The amount of energy and water we use in our home, the fuel we burn in our car, and the amount of packaging we toss from our takeout meals are just some of the factors that contribute to our carbon footprint.

Change can start with us. We should all be thinking on how we can start reducing our footprint on earth. There are many ways we can make changes in our home to offset our carbon footprint.

One such way is to think about our diet. A healthier and greener diet can be beneficial in many ways. A diet focusing on fruit and vegetables can help the environment as well as our waistline. Cutting back on meat is a simple and inexpensive way to help the environment. Reducing waste by planning meals, eating leftovers, and composting garbage is very helpful to the environment. Also decreasing the amount of takeouts not only helps our wallet but decreases the amount of waste (in the form of paper and plastic) that must be tossed.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle! We have heard this since grade school. Now is the time to put it into practice. Reducing the amount of garbage, energy and stuff in our homes can lower the carbon emissions. Reusing our products and purchasing products that are reusable are good habits. Recycling anything from cans, plastic water bottles, to used clothes is also a good practice. Donating working electronics, clothes and furniture helps in many ways. Recycling bins are something that we all need in our homes and we need to use them.

If we have the option, choosing renewable energy or green energy in our home helps the budget as well as the emissions. We need to explore the options available to us. LED lights are a simple but effective change to make. LED lights use at least 75% less energy than incandescent lights and can last 25 times longer. Also replacing older appliances with energy efficient new ones can help in our utility cost as well as in reducing our footprint.
